Reading Pillows

With the idea and direction from one of our members, Sharon Mitchell, several Altrusa of Eugene members sewed 20 pillows with book pockets (along with books) to be given to children with families that were in the First Place Family Annex program. The Annex is a facility of St. Vincent de Paul that provides a safe place for families to spend the night. It houses 19 families nightly and meals are provided by various community service groups. A living room, dining room and children’s reading room are the center of activity. We felt it would be an incentive for them to read if they had a comfortable pillow to lay their heads on while reading. We spoke with several staff at the facility and they said they could see the joy on the children’s faces when they received their pillows and books. That was all the thanks that we needed for this project.
