After reading an article in the Eugene Register Guard about Sleep in Heavenly Peace, our Service Chair, Dennis Hebert, knew immediately how Altrusa of Eugene could team up with them.
Many great charities provide clothing, meals, books and toys to families in need. But as wonderful as this aid is, few organizations offer suitable beds and bedding to the kids of these families that have housing. This is what SHP provides. While our previous Literacy project was providing reading pillows with pockets for books to First Place Family Annex, the idea of including some of these pillows to SHP, along with beds that Altrusa of Eugene would donate, seemed like a perfect match.
We contacted the Eugene SHP organization and had speakers at our May meeting. After hearing about their program, we immediately voted to donate money to purchase two sets of bunk beds for their program and include pillows and books with them.
SHP had what is called a “Build” on June15. This is where volunteers from the community come together and actually cut, drill, screw, sand and stain pieces that are used to build the beds. Eugene was part of a Nationwide build. We had a very coordinated assembly line that produced 136 beds! Nationwide that day SHP built 5,459 beds. What a wonderful gift for these children.
