Mission Statement

Altrusa International of Spokane is a volunteer service organization of professional people (practicing and retired) dedicated to improving their communities through personal service. Members combine their talents to develop and finance service projects meeting identified community needs. In addition, Altrusa provides opportunity for members to encourage one another as they learn to work as a team for the benefit of the community and their own personal development. Deep friendships are fostered through a variety of club activities.

Service Projects

  • Literacy projects are the focus of our service. We purchase requested books, equipment, and materials for Cooper Elementary, Logan Elementary, McDonald Elementary, and at Excelsior Youth Center to all to their classroom and library resources. Members work with students, volunteer at literacy events, and aid teachers and staff as requested at Lidgerwood Elmentary and Ridgeview Elementary and the YWCA (ECEAP) pre-school program.
  • Once a month we volunteer at "Our Place" clothing bank sorting and organizing donations. We also sponsor a sock drive in December and a diaper drive in the Spring. Altrusa will purchase "read to me" books for parents of infants and toddlers and will purchase books for older children served by the Center.
  • We sponsor receptions for newly naturalized citizens on Law Day in May and Constitution Day in September.
  • We support the YWCA Alternatives to Domestic Violence Program by providing emergency kits as requested.
  • We support "Barton School" (a volunteer tutoring program for English language learners) through individual members' service and contributions.
