Altrusa of Gig Harbor, Washington - News

Club Information

Altrusa International of Gig Harbor was chartered in 1981 to enhance our community. Our members, who are primarily women, participate in and share the responsibility for a variety of activities that support Gig Harbor's Children and their education. Although service work is out passion, we also share friendship and have fun together.

Gig Harbor Boys & Girls Club

For the past ten years, Altrusa International of Gig Harbor has worked to honor our pledge of $100,000 to equip the Community Kitchen at the Gig Harbor Boys & Girls Club. We celebrated that goal in September 2015 with the presentation of the final $10,000 check and a “Mortgage Burning Party. ”We are now expanding on this investment. Starting in 2016, Altrusa of Gig Harbor plans to help fill the “hunger” gap that exists during the summer, when there is no school lunch program in Gig Harbor, by organizing fundraisers to provide food scholarships for the 25% of children who would otherwise go hungry.

The Peninsula Youth Orchestra

Altrusa International of Gig Harbor has supported the Peninsula Youth Orchestra since its inception in 1998, and continue to provide annual scholarships to PRO students.

While Altrusa International of Gig Harbor mainly serves the needs of children in the local community, when an unmet need presents itself, the club is glad to step up.  One example is the “Purdy Purse Project.” We collect and provide women who have just been released from the Purdy Women’s Prison with purses, new and used, that we fill with toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, combs, tissues, a note pad, pen, and other sundries to help them start their new lives. “Make a Difference Day” projects have included everything from the “Million Cookie Challenge,” which resulted in over 16,000 cookies being sent to troops in Afghanistan, to a Children’s Book Drive that provided close to 1,000 books to disadvantaged children.

Serving our community is not a solo performance. Altrusa International of Gig Harbor proudly partners with effective organizations throughout the community to help where we can. Ongoing partnerships include local business organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce, schools, service groups, and the military through Joint Base Lewis-McCord.

All of us working together have enabled expansion of the number of people we serve.  And we acknowledge those partnerships in every way possible, while we work to develop and nurture leadership within our club to benefit our community.
