2016 Scholarship Application
"Project School Bell" - Clothing, personal hygiene items, and Prescription for Student Retention Program. This program works to improve the self esteem of elementary through high school students. Students are identified by the Lincoln County School District’s staff based on their needs for additional assistance and at the beginning of the school year, clothing and personal hygiene items are provided. Project School Bell works with the school district throughout the year, going on several shopping trips. Through improving the self image of these children, we hope to encourage these students to stay in school. Project School Bell also pays for prescriptions that are needed by students who are unable to pay for needed medications.
Something to Smile About" - Dental Program. “Something to Smile About” is a very successful program that focuses on dental hygiene as preventative care, as well as urgent dental treatment needs of school aged children and eligible women. The program also provides dental kits, educational information, and sponsors a dental van through Medical Teams International, to visit local schools.
Literacy Project. The Literacy Committee sponsors the Inspired writers Project, which brings author Dale Basye to Lincoln County schools each spring with the goal of encouraging young writers at a formative time in their academic careers. Dale's dynamic and humorous visits to the Lincoln County 6th grade classrooms include discussion of writing techniques and the writing life, as well as an autographed copy of his popular book, "Heck, Where the Bad Kids Go," for each student. The Literacy Committee writes grants and participates in the club fundraisers, arranges the author's visit and schedule, purchases and compiles books and supplies for each class, escorts Dale to classrooms, and arranges a social event for Dale, Club members, and guests. Past and present contributors to the Inspired Writers Project-without whom it would not be possible-include the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund: www.ctsi.nsn.us/charitable-contribution-fund , Plum Creek Foundation: www.plumcreek.com/community/plum-creek-foundation , Newport Yaquina Bay Optimist Club: newportyaquinabayoptmistclub.blogspot.com , Canyon Way Bookstore: canyonway.com , and Tyee Lodge: www.tyeelodge.com . The Literacy Committee also sponsors a Little Free Library: littlefreelibrary.org and keeps it stocked with free books for all the community to access.
Helping Hands Award: Altrusa International of Yaquina Bay annually recognizes a local business that has given outstanding support to the club and its projects during the year.
Annual Garage Sale. This event is held in late Summer or early Fall of each year. This is a big fundraiser for our club and it also provides the community with affordable goods and clothing.
Trivia Bee. Altrusa hosts a trivia bee contest with teams sponsored by many area businesses. Proceeds from this profitable event fund scholarships and literacy projects for the community.
Newport Seafood & Wine Festival. Altrusa pours a variety of delicious wines from Henry Estates during the annual festival in late February.
